Alereon Announces FCC Certification for Worldwide Wireless USB Adapter

AUSTIN, Texas – August 11, 2008 – Alereon, Inc.,the Certified Wireless USB technology leader for Ultra Wideband (UWB) WiMedia solutions, today announced the AL5604 Worldwide Wireless USB Adapter, which provides Wireless USB connectivity for laptops and desktop PCs, has been granted FCC modular certification as the first approved Wireless USB product for use in UWB bandgroups one, three and six. The USB Adapter is the first of several Alereon designs expected to be granted modular certification by the FCC in the WiMedia upper bandgroups this quarter. The AL5604 is based on the AL5000 family chipset, which covers the entire UWB spectrum from 3.1–10.6 GHz.

“PC developers worldwide require solutions that allow them to seamlessly manufacture new products and conduct everyday business operations without barriers,” said Eric Broockman, Alereon’s CEO. “The AL5604 not only offers a full range of Wireless USB capabilities that meets worldwide regulatory requirements, but also meets customers performance needs achieving over 140Mbps throughput to a native device. As Alereon continues to receive FCC certification on its products, we are able to effectively transition from testing to global production.”

“The higher band groups supported by the AL5604 allow various global markets, including the United States, European Union, Korea, Japan, China and New Zealand, to have a frequency plan that works within their regulatory environment,” said Dr. Jim Lansford, CTO of Alereon. “Alereon continues to maintain FCC compliance while also providing full access to more than 10 channels of Wireless USB in any country, enabling a true worldwide solution.”

Alereon’s AL5000 Chipset family, which includes the AL5604, transmits and receives WiMedia band groups one through six, which span frequencies of 3.1 to 10.6 GHz respectively. While band group one is only permitted in a single channel in most countries today, by supporting band groups three and six, Alereon provides consumers in Europe, Japan, Korea, China and New Zealand with as many as 19 additional channels, unlike competitive band group three only solutions that offer as few as a single channel. Alereon’s chipset is ideal for Certified Wireless USB, Bluetooth or WiMedia manufacturers that wish to address various world markets including the US, Europe, Japan, Korea and China, which have differing UWB requirements. The AL5000 allows manufacturers to produce a single product or SKU that can be designed and sold worldwide with a simple software modification to meet local regulatory requirements.
